We are Josh and Liz adventurous entrepreneurs and parents to a beautiful black and white rescue cat named Kiwi. We are the owners of Civilized Sasquatch Artisan Products and we operate our business out of Kelowna, BC.
Frankly put, this company was born because we are pissed off about the current state of the cosmetic industry and its effects on the environment and our health. We were both raised on sustainable farms in different parts of the world (Josh in Ontario, Liz in New Zealand), and our love of cooking led us to both train as chefs. We met in Western Canada, as so many seem to do, and travelled the world living off grid and working at the most progressive restaurants we could find. This helped shape and channel our views of the world, and gave us the insight to respect what it takes to live in harmony with our planet and people. Understanding what it takes to live clean and self sufficiently lead us down this road. We started this experience by tearing down our ignorance around the soaps/conditioners/moisturizers we were using, and then developing recipes that worked for what was around us. Low and behold like everything else going on these days, the answer lies with what our ancestors already knew.
Our age of industrialism has moved us forward in so many ways, but has also stunted us. I hate saying that we are 'bringing it back' or 'reinventing the past'. We should never have moved away from it in the first place. The first natural product that we made Burnt Pine and Whiskey Beard Oil was so popular with our friends that we knew we had to share it with the world. Before long we expanded our range to include soaps, healing salves and dog products and now 3 years later we are loving life being knee deep in shipping boxes. Keeping our values traditional in this sense is the only thing that makes sense, and we strive constantly to make products to bring us together and strengthen our community around us.
We pride ourselves in using pure, naturally sourced ingredients using old school recipes to make kickass artisan products. With Liz's background in aromatherapy we developed our recipes and thoroughly tested them on ourselves first to ensure the best quality. Our premium cosmetic products are 100% handmade by us and have a base of organic tallow (you can read more about the benefits of using tallow on our blog). Each product is enriched with a special blend of herb oils and tinctures, that we grow, forage and source locally. These botanicals are carefully chosen to hydrate, soften and condition your skin.
We love collaborating with artisans and we aim to source most of our products from local crafters. There are many benefits to buying locally produced hand-crafted products. Studies have shown that locally owned independent businesses —many of which sell wares produced by hand— return a higher percentage of their revenue to their communities than chains. That means the people who make money off sales at independent businesses, owners and employees, are more likely to spend their salary at places in the same area where they work. Work done by hand is always made at a higher quality and will last much longer than a product that is mass produced plus there is less of them so you will be able to enjoy a product that is as unique as you are.
We make our products in small batches with premium natural ingredients to ensure strict quality controls. We never test on animals or do business with suppliers that test on animals. Our products do not contain: Parabens, Sulphates (SLS SLES), Synthetic Dye, Palm Oil, Mineral Oils, Petrolatum. We believe that you do not need to use 40+ ingredients to achieve awesome results you just need simple, clean, pure ingredients.
Our packaging is minimalist, recycled, and as environmentally friendly as possible. We strive to make the best products possible so that you can enjoy them knowing that you are using the best for your grooming and skincare needs.
We know that we wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for you, our customers. We also know that you have many options when it comes to which company you choose to support, so we are forever grateful that so many of you have chosen us.
