About Our Ingredients - Healing Herbs and Oils
We believe the ingredients make the product. Here is a list of the herbs and oils that we use in our products and their benefits to your body and health. We don't dilute our recipes with any cheap fillers, synthetic fragrances, or preservatives. We aim to grow most of these herbs ourselves over the summer (organic), or we source them from local farmers and or distributors. We make all of our herbal oil infusions (solar) and tinctures using only the best organically grown plants. The ingredients that we use nourish the skin and provide the essential vitamins and essential fatty acids the skin craves. We never use any cheap filler oils, synthetic fragrances, palm oil, or harsh preservatives.

Cold Pressed Olive Oil * – Olive oil is superb for moisturizing the skin, containing 3 major antioxidants and hydroxytyrosol which prevents free radical damage to the skin. Because olive oil is highly adulterated, we only source first press food grade olive oil to use in our products.
We do not use Olive Pomace Oil and this is why.........Pomace oil is expelled using solvent extraction, typically hexane. This solvent is added to the pomace of the olive, which is the leftover pulp and pit of the olive that is already been ground into a paste. This extraction process removes the last of the oil still remaining, like taking the last of the water out of a damp sponge. It takes advantage every drop of olive oil available, so that no oil goes to waste. After the oil is extracted, the solvent is removed and the oil is refined. So what’s the issue? Many consumers just don’t like solvent extraction (especially in the natural and specialty food industry). The same concern applies to any conventional domestic oil like soybean or canola. These are also produced using solvent extraction too, which is unfortunately the industry norm right now. Olive oil has been touted as a great oil because of it’s many health benefits. Some of these benefits apply no matter which grade of olive oil you buy-- like the fact that it’s high in healthy monounsaturated fats. Other health benefits are exclusive to Extra Virgin Olive Oil only, like the cancer-fighting polyphenols found in varying levels in fresh EVOO. Refined oils like Pure Olive Oil, refined Olive Oil and Olive Pomace Oil miss out on these health benefits exclusive to first cold pressed oil.
Hemp Seed Oil * - Organic Hemp Seed Oil can be used to nourish the skin and hair due to its high content of proteins and essential fatty acids. Hemp Seed Oil is said to closely match our own skins lipids and the essential fatty acids are readily absorbed into the skin. Hemp Seed Oil contribute greatly to protecting the skin’s moisture barrier, improving the texture of skin, and reducing the visible signs of aging.

We are knowledgeable about safe essential oil dilutions and contraindications.
Calendula *- We use calendula in our Splendidly Better Beard Balm, Pawsitive Relief Dog Balm and Redneck Reparative Salve. Calendula is known throughout the world as a powerful healing plant. Spruce Tips* - We use spruce tips in our Burnt Pine and Whiskey Beard Oil, B3 Moustache Wax and Splendidly Better Beard Balm. Wormwood * - The wormwood plant has played a central role in natural medicine and holistic healing for a long time. Because of the numerous wormwood benefits, healers considered it to be a universal cure throughout the Middle Ages. In fact, wormwood benefits are so broad that wormwood earned the old German adage, roughly: “wormwood makes everything good”. Hildegard of Bingen also thought very highly of wormwood. She relied on wormwood benefits to treat both internal and external ailments. She called wormwood the “most important master for exhaustion”.
Plantain *- We use plantain in our Splendidly Better Beard Balm, Pawsitive Relief Dog Balm and Redneck Reparative Salve. Plantain has been used as a panacea in some Native American cultures and with some very good reasons. Many of its active constituents show antibacterial and antimicrobial properties, as well as being anti-inflammatory and antitoxic. The leaves, shredded or chewed, are a traditional treatment for insect and animal bites and the antibacterial action helps prevent infection and the anti-inflammatory helps to relieve pain, burning, and itching.
Shea Butter:*- We only use certified fair trade Shea butter. The butter is hand processed and uses no chemicals or additives. Shea butter was used in the kitchen and for the protection of the skin in Africa, especially because of the harsh climatic conditions that strain the epidermis. Many tribes used it for many purposes and called it "white gold." It is great for razor burn, cuts, diaper rash, eczema.
Shea butter has excellent skin care properties: It is soothing, moisturizing, softening and finally protective
Beeswax * One thing which separates beeswax apart is its humectant characteristics. This essentially means that it draws more moisture to the skin, while also providing a barrier which seals the moisture. This makes it excellent for lip balms and unlike other products such as petroleum jelly it will not suffocate the skin. Instead it will allow your skin to “breathe.” We source our beeswax from local farms.
100% grass-fed Tallow – All of our tallow comes from 100% grass-fed cows raised on small family farms in BC. While it is super important for us to receive the highest quality tallow, it is equally important to support local families and farms. Man-made toxins found in conventionally raised cows makes the fat from non-organic fats unfit to nourish your skin. Tallow not only has many health benefits ut it is also very nourishing for our skin. It is health promoting and has a cumulative effect, which means the more you use it, the more soft and supple your skin becomes. Think moisturized, flexible, soft and glowing skin! Our skin cell membrane is made up primarily of fatty acids, tallow has the most similar similar fatty acid profile. This results in thorough absorption of the tallow balm, and assimilation of the vitamins and fatty acids into our own skin, truly feeding your skin.
Why Do We Scent With Only Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils? Because It's The Natural Thing To Do!
Essential oils have benefits beyond just scent. The chemical composition of essential oils cannot be recreated in a laboratory. Essential oils are derived from real plant material. Fragrance oils are artificially created and, even those that are derived from natural components, do not offer the therapeutic advantages of essential oils. Fragrance oils offer no additional benefits beyond scent.
Synthetic fragrance oils do not have healing or medicinal properties. Essential oils retain valuable properties from their parent plant. For example, essential oils like Tea Tree and Rosemary have natural antibacterial or antiviral properties.
Synthetic fragrance oils may duplicate the smell of a flower or herb, but they have no aromatherapeutic value.
Although synthetic fragrances or "nature identical" oils are available in a wider selection and at a much lower cost, we use only the purest natural plant essential oils, not those cut or adulterated with inferior oils or chemicals. Fragrance oils are specifically designed to artificially mimic the scent of a natural botanical.
Skin care products are only as good as the ingredients used to create them. It does not make sense to create natural, handmade products with synthetic oils that offer nothing but scent and chemicals!
Ever wonder why skin care companies would ever use synthetic fragrances? Fragrance oils have a much lower cost and a much longer lifespan.
